Wonder Women Zine.

Branding & Visual Identity, Editorial Design

Wonder Women, a zine publication that draws on the tradition of handmade, underground feminist zines from the 1990s. It's a tribute to the trailblazing women in pop culture who have not just influenced, but empowered us. This zine is a tangible testament to our progress and a powerful reminder of the work that still lies ahead for gender equity and inclusion for all. Looking to fill the void in print media specifically for women, by women, Wonder Women is striving to develop an engaging editorial design—one that deeply conveys the distinctive plight and simultaneous beauty of the feminine experience.

In the ideation of this project, I was deeply inspired by the feminist punk zines of the 1990s, a movement created out of a deep necessity for community and solidarity. These zines were often handmade with found materials because that's what was accessible. Reproducing the message of feminist rebellion was the most important goal for these women. Using many similar typographic and image treatments that honor traditional zine designs, I explored the ethos and lyricism of Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, and Janis Joplin. Feminist icons in their own rights, these women have paved the way for the generations that succeed them, raging against the misogyny machine.

The edgy, unkempt typography I've used throughout reflects a mindset of non-conformity and resistance against established cultural norms around gender and sexuality. The neon-gothic color scheme I used throughout the editorial design sheds a technicolor light on a rather dark and seedy history of the mistreatment of women within popular culture environments, and the consequent rebellion by these artists that followed.

By incorporating traditional grunge image techniques, such as halftones, ink splatters, and photocopier effects, I paid tribute to the handmade beginnings of these feminist publications. The essence of this project is centered around celebrating our ancestral feminine heritage, as all these influential women have nurtured and shaped their succeeding generations.
